I was dressing Mimi for sleep, but she wanted to read the book Yum, Yum. Since Superman has that book memorized, I asked him to read it to Mimi while I finished pulling over her onesie.
The book has a call and response structure. "What does the cow eat?" "The cow eats grass, but what does the horse eat?"
The text of the cat section of the book reads, "What does the cat eat?" "The cat drinks milk."
Superman has always been uncomfortable with the nonparallel nature of the cat narrative. When I read him the book, he always corrects me. "What does the cat drink?"
Now that he is reading to Mimi , he "reads," "What does the cat drink?" and then added, editorially, "It doesn't say 'eat' it says 'drink.'"
